When I was a young girl, one of my favorite television shows was "The Odd Couple" with Jack Klugman and Tony Randall. I loved that they were the best of friends even though in many ways they were complete opposites. In the end, though they were very much alike. Just like me and Shiloe. I think of us as the “God” Couple and our story is about two people with the unlikeliest friendship born from the most "G-oddest" of circumstances.
If you haven’t already heard the story, 'Shi' and I met at work. We were both in a training class together and really, by all accounts, the two people least likely to become friends – especially the best of friends: Me; a transplanted ‘‘Newyorican”, mom and grandma, Christian and considerably older than Shiloe; a newly transplanted West Coast native, single, child free and, at the time, a pagan. But God!
In a strange twist of events we not only ended up sitting next to each other, but a conversation that happened at random in the classroom opened up a door and an opportunity for Shiloe and I to speak; about God of all things!
So, to make a very long story short (a story much better told than written, so feel free to ask us) after several conversations, and little bit of time, Shiloe and I struck up a friendship that shines to this day and along the way, Shiloe found Jesus, but I'll let her tell you about it!
Shiloe's side:
If three and a half years ago, if someone were to tell me that I would be sitting in a cafe typing this quick read on what I feel to be the calling of my life, I would call them crazy. Never in a million, bajillion years would I have thought that I would be a co-owner of an art studio, let alone being a part of "Team Jesus". Growing up in a predominantly atheist/pagan household where the only word that included "God" was actually a damnation, my whole outlook in life revolved around just the idea that something higher possibly existed but don't ask how or why it works. I moved to Florida on a leap of faith that the life that I would leave behind in my hometown of Reno, NV would be better. It had to be better (that's a story for another day). When I took the job that lead me to befriending Aida, it made no sense at the time. The job was over an hour and a half away at only $9.50 per hour with little to no promise that I would move up or even get progressive raises. No one in their right mind would have taken such little pay so far away, but something told me to. Little did I know that these small leaps of faith would completely alter and change my life forever...
Our Side:
So, you read above on how we came together, but now you are probably wondering, "What EXACTLY do these chicks do?" Well...we thought that it would be rad if there was a place that encouraged and celebrated creativity and a place where people could feel welcome, sort of like the TV show "Cheers.
Let's be real: Not all misfits go clubbing or are bar flies, and not all Christians spend all of their time in church. With this mind, our studio was born. We got to thinking: Where is there a place where people can come and enjoy each other's company with a friendly, welcoming atmosphere?
And then a light shone down (Ahhhhhh!! Picture two rays shining down from the heavens)....A studio..., yeah, wouldn't that be awesome?
This is our aim: A place where you can Come, Sit, Create and feel God's love all under one roof.
This is where you come in! The Studio That Love Built can and will only happen with the shared love and support of our friends and patrons, hence its name.
BOOM! Let's get creating!!
